Abstract

This project will develop and demonstrate a rechargeable Energy Storage System (ESS) that will interface directly into an adjustable frequency drive controlling a 100 HP 460 VAC 3 phase induction motor. The ESS must store enough energy to supply the existing motor/motor drive as it lifts and lowers a 14,000-lb. weight 180 3 times in succession. The ESS must integrate directly into an existing system with minimal redesign. The system must meet rigorous Electromagnetic Interference tests per MIL-STD 461G, and the Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests per MIL-STD 810G. The system must recapture energy produced by dynamic braking of the motor. The system must be extremely safe and reliable. The project will evaluate various energy storage methods, produce a design for a proposed solution, run simulations to verify the design, conduct subscale testing to verify the simulation model, and summarize findings in a report.
