Abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) and our subcontractor Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) propose to develop a suite of radiological/nuclear (R/N) detection and contextual sensor modules to enable real-time understanding and association of potential R/N threats in complex urban environments. The proposed Radiation and contextual Data Integration for Urban Mapping 360° (RADIUM-360) will leverage computer vision approaches and new 3D analysis techniques for Lidar data streams to provide 3D mapping, R/N mapping and localization, source attribution, and change detection. The proposed effort will leverage PSI’s experience building highly integrated vehicle-borne R/N systems with integrated contextual source attribution capabilities and LBNL’s experience with real-time analysis of Lidar and 3D localization of gamma sources. The developed modules will be designed to be rapidly reconfigured and installed in new vehicles in < 30 minutes with minimal manual configuration through the use of automated calibration approaches. RADIUM-360 will enable R/N vehicle operators to adjudicate the majority of benign sources of radiation without a dismounted search, significantly reducing the operational burden of their R/N mission. To achieve this goal, the capability will automatically extract and intuitively display exculpatory contextual information for the vast majority of benign source encounters.
