Abstract

This purpose of this work is to determine the feasibility of a software defined radio (SDR) platform that can support both legacy (e.g., analog FM and P25), current (LTE and 5G) and future standards. The compute processing requirements will be evaluated by running legacy and current protocols on modern processors with instrumented software, to measure the computational requirements so that a future-proof solution can be engineered. The radio system requirements: receiver and transmitter linearity, filtering and frequency stability will also be assessed, using existing SDR hardware as a baseline. The result will be a system specification for both the SDR hardware and software, and an assessment of the growth potential of the platform. An SDR able to support the requirements of multiple Public Safety Radio protocols will have broad commercial applications, not only by providing state-of-the-art capabilities to first responder, but as a general prototyping and development platform for commercial users.
