Abstract

During assembly of munitions in forward operational areas, military personnel are exposed to solar radiation that can interfere with safe operating conditions. Consequently, the U.S. Marine Corps requires a sunshade that provides 70% solar blockage and is authorized by the Naval Ordnance Safety and Security Activity (NOSSA) for use with the A/E32K-11 Munitions Lifting Assembly (MLA). Current commercially available sunshades do not address electrostatic discharge (ESD) risks associated with explosives or electronics. Select Engineering Services (SES) is proposing a sunshade solution that will address ESD safety using conductive thread stitching throughout the sunshade material, which represents an entirely new approach to sunshade design.
