Data Resources

The main categories of data available on SBIR.GOV are Solicitations & Topics, Awards, and Companies that have won awards.  Data can be obtained through:

•    Downloadable files in several different formats (XLS, JSON, or XML)
•    An API (Application Programming Interface)

A Data Dictionary file contains information on available fields across all of the categories. Online data dictionaries are also available.

Solicitations & Topics

Solicitations cover the high-level information on the time-frame and a general description of a funding opportunity.  Topics refer to very specific technology areas.

•    The fields publicly available can be found on the Solicitation Data Dictionary or in the Data Dictionary file.

•    The Topics page has a list of all Open, Future, or Closed topics.  Each can be downloaded in either XLS, JSON, or XML format. Please note the Solicitation page does not currently have an option to download data.

•    The Solicitation and Topic API can be used to see Open, Future, or Closed solicitations. This API also allows for Topics to be pulled.

•    Also, on the Topic page only 1,000 records may be downloaded at a time.

Awards

Every SBIR/STTR award since the program’s inception is available for download.

•    Data can be downloaded on the Awards Data page, or obtain via the Award API.
•    The fields publicly available can be viewed on the  Awards Data Dictionary page or via the Data Dictionary file.
•    Please note that more Award fields are available via the downloaded than the API.
•    On the Award Data page only 1,000 records may be downloaded at a time.
•    All Award data can be downloaded as Award data with abstract information (290 MB) and Award data without abstract information (65 MB). This information can also be located on the Award Data Page.

Calculate award timeliness metrics for an individual award, or for an agency or branch.

The SBIR/STTR Policy Directive sets a target for agencies to notify applicants of award decisions within 90 calendar days of the closing date of the solicitation*,
and awards should be issued no more than 180 calendar days after the closing date of the solicitation. Please note the National Science Foundation (NSF) and
the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should notify applicants within one year of the closing date of the solicitation and make awards within 15 months of the
         closing date of the solicitation.

*Historically, SBIR.gov has not always required the solicitation close date and in some instances Phase II awards (primarily within the Department of Defense)
may be governed by the original Phase I solicitation close date. Therefore, it is recommended that timeliness calculations utilize the latest date between the
solicitation close and proposal receipt date for more accurate calculations.

         •  Time between Solicitation Close and Award Notification (in days) =
[(Date of Notification minus (Solicitation Close Date or Proposal Receipt Date, whichever is latest)]
         •  Time between Award Notification and First Day of Award (in days) =
[Proposal Award Date minus Date of Notification]
         •  Time from Solicitation Close to Award Issuance (in days) =
[Proposal Award Date minus Solicitation Close Date or Proposal Receipt Date, whichever is latest]

•    A list of companies can be downloaded from the Portfolio page or via the Firm API.

•    Please note the fields available for download differ slightly from the API.
•    Also, on the Portfolio page only 5,000 records may be downloaded at a time.
