Register your company
The Company Registry maintains SBC information, tracking ownership and affiliation requirements for all companies applying to the SBIR or STTR program. All applicants to the program are required to complete their registration at SBA's Company Registry prior to submitting an application. The SBC will report and/or update ownership information to SBA prior to each SBIR or STTR application submission. The SBC will also be able to view all of the ownership and affiliation requirements of the program on the Company Registry site. Completed registrations will receive a unique SBC Control ID and a pdf file to be used for submissions at any of the 11 participating agencies in the SBIR or STTR programs.
Ownership data collected in the Company Registry will not be shared publicly.
Contact a funding agency
As SBA does not directly provide funding to companies, you want to identify which of the participating agencies your technology best fits with and reach out directly to that agency to understand how best to work with them. A few useful ways to identify an agency:
- Learn more about the missions of each agency here (or by checking out their websites directly): https://www.sbir.gov/tutorials/individual-agency-requirements/
- Search for funding opportunities and topics being funded: https://www.sbir.gov/sbirsearch/topic/current - be sure to check out closed topics as well, since that can be a good indicator of what an agency is interested in, even if they don’t have a currently open topic on it
- Check out past award winners with projects that might be similar to yours and who funded them: https://www.sbir.gov/sbirsearch/award/all - you could even find awardees near you to ask for advice
Find funding opportunities
Agencies post solicitations describing the technical areas and seek proposals from small businesses. Each agency has its own proposal submission guidelines. A few agencies follow an annual solicitation proposal cycle, while others publish solicitations as the need arises.

Scams, Spam, and Fraud
SBA only communicates from email addresses ending in @sba.gov. If you are being contacted by someone claiming to be from the SBA who is not using an official SBA email address, you should suspect fraud.
